Far Cry 6 may be a cross-gen game, but some of its new features will not be coming to the PS5 and Xbox Series X for the time being. In a new interview with Wccftech, Ubisoft’s 3D Team Lead Programmer Stephanie Brenham revealed that ray tracing, one of the biggest new features supported by the new-gen consoles, will be exclusive to the PC version of Far Cry 6.
“Ray tracing is a PC only feature,” she said. “On console, our objective has been to take advantage of new hardware capabilities, optimizing performance targeting 4K and achieving 60 FPS, for instance, all while ensuring new game features, like our dynamic weather system, are supported on all platforms.”
While the PC version will include ray-traced features including shadows, reflections will be handled in a hybrid manner.
“We chose hybrid ray-traced reflections because it has the best quality-to-performance balance and allows us to support DXR even on mid-range hardware,” said Brenham.
“This way more players can enjoy ray tracing in scenarios where it’s impossible to use SSLR due to technology limitations.”
Far Cry 6 PC Features Revealed
Far Cry 6’s PC version will include the following features:
- Uncapped framerate
- In-depth customization options
- Hybrid input and extended control customization
- Multi-monitor and widescreen support
- In-game benchmark for performance analysis
- DirectX Raytracing (DXR)
- AMD FidelityFX Super Resolution Support
Being an AMD partner title, Far Cry 6 will use AMD’s FildelityFX Super Resolution (FSR). On that, Brenham confirmed that FSR is also a PC-exclusive feature, although there are games coming out gradually on consoles supporting the same feature.
The game’s PC version will include a benchmarking utility as well as provide live previews of all graphics options when adjusting them in the settings. For accessibility, Far Cry 6 includes closed captions, colour blind mode and text-to-speech support. The game also includes a built-in photo mode just like the previous instalment. Ubisoft also revealed the game’s PC system requirements, and those who want to play the game with ray tracing turned on are going to require some serious hardware.
Far Cry 6 releases on October 7 for PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S consoles.
