It was revealed during the February 2022 Nintendo Direct that Chrono Cross and Radical Dreamers are being remastered for consoles and PC.
Two classic Square Enix titles are being remastered on modern systems, as Chrono Cross and Radical Dreamers are being released in a single package. There have been rumors circulating about a Chrono Cross remaster coming to PlayStation systems in the past, but this new game will be called Chrono Cross: The Radical Dreamers Edition and it’s coming to Nintendo Switch, PC, PS4, and Xbox One on April 7.
Chrono Cross and Radical Dreamers are both the sequel to Chrono Trigger. Chrono Trigger has two sequels due to the choice of the developers. Radical Dreamers was originally a visual novel/adventure game that was released for the Satellaview, which was a Japan-exclusive add-on for the SNES. Many of the concepts and ideas in Radical Dreamers were reworked into Chrono Cross, which was released for the PS1. This game did receive an English localization, though it was never released in Europe.
It was revealed during the February 2022 Nintendo Direct that Chrono Cross: The Radical Dreamers Edition is coming on April 7. Square Enix revealed that the 3D models in the game have been converted to HD, that there is new artwork and character redesigns created by Nobuteru Yuuki, and composer Yasunori Mitsuda has refined the music in the game. As is the case with most Square Enix remasters, Chrono Cross: The Radical Dreamers Edition has quality-of-life features, such as auto-battle and the ability to turn off random battles. It’s also possible to switch to the original Chrono Cross visuals. A trailer for Chrono Cross: The Radical Dreamers Edition is available on the official Nintendo YouTube Channel.
Chrono Cross: The Radical Dreamers Edition also contains the first official release of Radical Dreamers outside of Japan. This is a huge moment for Square Enix fans, as it was believed that Radical Dreamers would never be localized. Radical Dreamers tells the story of three thieves named Serge, Kid, and Magil, who break into the Viper Mansion in search of an artifact called the Frozen Flame. This small story was expanded into Chrono Cross, where Serge travels between different dimensions and learns the truth about the mysterious fate of one of the Chrono Trigger characters.
The February 2022 Nintendo Direct was a huge event for old-school JRPG fans, as some of Square Enix’s finest titles from the SNES/PS1 era are being reborn on modern systems. The only question now is whether the missing piece of the puzzle will also be remastered, as Chrono Trigger is still missing from modern platforms. The time is right for a Chrono Trigger remake to be made, and the success of Chrono Cross: The Radical Dreamers Edition might prompt Square Enix into reviving the series.
