Elden Ring Director Hidetaka Miyazaki Says He Won’t Play The Game

FromSoftware Director Hidetaka Miyazaki recently revealed that he has no plans to play Elden Ring when it launches in February 2022.

FromSoftware President Hidetaka Miyazaki recently revealed in an interview that he will not play Elden Ring when it launches next year. After essentially remaining dark on the title for two years, FromSoftware and publisher Bandai Namco allowed Elden Ring to resurface earlier this year during Summer Game Fest. The reveal came alongside an official gameplay trailer and release date, putting an end to rumors that claimed Elden Ring either didn’t exist or had been quietly axed.

In the several months since then, those looking forward to the new action-RPG have seen much more of the game in action. Additional gameplay videos crop up every so often, for instance, and fresh details continue to make the rounds given the imminence of Elden Ring’s release. FromSoftare even hosted a Closed Network Test in November, in which a select number of players were able to go hands-on with the experience. Unfortunately, the Closed Network Test, along with jailbroken PS4s, opened a datamining gateway, resulting in the leak of story-related Elden Ring details. Interestingly, the one person who isn’t worried about encountering potential spoilers has no plans to play the game post-launch.

Speaking with Edge Magazine (via GameRant), Elden Ring Director Hidetaka Miyazaki revealed he probably won’t play the RPG because he already knows all of its secrets. Still, the developer noted this particular project is close to his “ideal game.” Miyazaki told the publication, “[I] wouldn’t get any of the unknowns that the fresh player is going to experience… it wouldn’t feel like playing. But if I did, then this would be close to the ideal game I’d want.” The Director added that while he didn’t set out to create his ideal adventure with Elden Ring, “…the open-world enriches [the] ideal experience” he’s long wanted to achieve.

Of course, Hidetaka Miyazaki isn’t the first developer to refuse to play their own game; he undoubtedly won’t count as the last, either. It’s still an interesting line of thought, though, that someone can pour so much time and effort into a project, then never truly get to enjoy said project to its fullest extent.

Elden Ring’s original due date was set for January 2022. In October, FromSoftware and Bandai Namco delayed the title by a month, citing a need for more development time because the “depth and strategic freedom” of the experience exceeded early expectations. The wait for the full release continues to quickly draw to a close, however, much to the delight of fans.
