GTA Trilogy Physical Upgrade is Only for Xbox & Players Are Not Pleased

Players recently discovered the physical version of the GTA trilogy remaster on PS4 cannot be upgraded to the PS5, while the Xbox version can.

Displeased fans have discovered that the newly released physical version of the Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy – The Definitive Edition on PlayStation 4 cannot be upgraded to the PlayStation 5 version, unlike the Xbox version that gives players upgrades between the Xbox One and Series versions. The physical editions of the GTA Trilogy remaster released last week and left many fans underwhelmed and disappointed. Unlike its original counterparts, the collection’s box features no map, poster, booklets, or art on its disc – but instead a generic-styled logo of the game’s title. While current-generation titles do not tend to be jam-packed with extras anymore, some had high hopes due to years of Rockstar including additional goodies.

The long-anticipated GTA Trilogy remaster released last month across consoles and PC, allowing modern audiences to experience the classic PS2-era titles – Grand Theft Auto III, Grand Theft Auto: Vice City, and Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas – revamped with visual enhancements and gameplay improvements for current-generation platforms. Each title features higher-resolution textures, greater draw distances, revamped lighting, weather effects, and modernized controls with the addition of each platform version of the Definitive Edition being slightly different from the other. Unfortunately, disappointed fans took to social media following its launch to scorn its graphical glitches, bugs and more that deemed the title unplayable.

Dismay regarding the Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy – The Definitive Edition continues, as fans have now discovered physical upgrades are only available for Xbox users. According to popular Grand Theft Auto informant Ben Turpin on Twitter, the remastered collection’s PS5 upgrade isn’t available for players who picked up the physical version on PS4. However, Xbox users can get both the digital Xbox One and Series versions. While Turpin is unsure why this decision was made, another fan seems to have a confirmation it was intentional and not an error. Twitter user Wes Fido states that after reaching out to Rockstar Support to ask about the situation, the specialist confirmed that it wasn’t a bug and players could only upgrade the digital versions of the GTA Trilogy remaster.

The Definitive Edition is widely considered a new low for Rockstar Games, as the studio’s numerous decisions have made players believe that they no longer care for the acclaimed titles that popularized the series. In a recent acknowledgment of its terrible launch and subsequent (but temporary) removal, the classic editions of the GTA Trilogy were made free for PC users who purchased the collection on the Rockstar Launcher. That said, players these versions unplayable due to being outdated ports from initial releases, and players are still unsure why they were made available without being updated.

Despite Rockstar Games announcing the maligned GTA Trilogy would improve over time with patches, issues regarding the title seem to be growing every day. An official statement regarding the absence of the PlayStation upgrade is yet to be made by the studio, but many players are hopeful it could come with the console version’s next major patch in the following weeks.
