A joint venture with Volkswagen and Pod Point has seen electric charging points installed at more than 400 of Tesco’s UK stores.
This has helped create the country’s largest retail electric car charging network.
In April 2021, Tesco announced that it had delivered 500,000 complimentary charges via the network – equivalent to more than 10 million miles of free EV driving.

Transport Secretary Grant Shapps said it was “great to see one of Britain’s most iconic household names leading the way with electric vehicle charge points.
“In the time it takes to pick up the groceries, drives up and down the country can now quickly and easily charge their cars.”
How to find your nearest Tesco electric charger
Tesco electric car charging point locations can be found by visiting the Pod Point website.
You’ll find electric charging bays at Tesco Extra and Tesco Superstore sites throughout the UK, the majority of which are free-to-use 7kW fast chargers.
Other 22kW and 50kW rapid chargers are ‘priced in line with market rates’.
50kW rapid chargers cost 28p per kWh to use.
Interestingly, 22kW chargers, where 50kW units are also installed, are actually free-to-use, just like the 7kW chargers.
How to use a Tesco electric charging point
To use a Tesco electric charging point, you’ll need to download the Pod Point smartphone app or use the Pod Point website.
The 7kW fast chargers are available free of charge while you are shopping.
According to a Volkswagen calculator tool, if you spend an hour on grocery shopping every week, you’ll receive enough free charge for around 1,400 miles a year. That’s the equivalent of travelling from Newcastle to Madrid.
