Put a price on carbon and speed the switch to green energy

National ‘energy tax’ won’t be a burden for most Americans

In the Sept. 24 op-ed “National energy tax burdens consumers, hinders environmental progress,”  the authors, who are leaders of local oil and gas trade associations, fail to mention that “putting a price on carbon” will undoubtedly be combined with dividend payments to be received monthly by all Americans.

As an example, the Energy Innovation and Carbon Dividend Act, which is promoted by the 200,000 members of Citizens’ Climate Lobby, would impose an increasing fee on carbon emissions at the source (mine, well, port of entry) and return the proceeds as an equal monthly dividend paid to all Americans. Study after study has shown that the dividend will more than offset the increased cost of carbon-based products, leaving money in the pockets of most Americans. At the same time, our air and water will be cleaned from the fossil fuel emissions that are today causing so many unnecessary deaths. Find more information at www.energyinnovationact.org.
