Sony Partners with Honda to Build Electric Cars

  • Sony and Honda have signed a memorandum of understanding for a joint venture to produce and sell electric vehicles.
  • While this venture is still in the early stages, Sony expects the first consumer products will see the road in 2025.
  • It’s unclear what the company will be named, but it will rely on both partners bringing their respective prowess to the table.

It appears Sony is taking a leap toward building physical cars with the help of Honda. According to a release from Sony, these two Japanese giants have signed a memorandum of understanding with intent to form a new company as a joint venture.

While the deal still is in its early stages, Sony wants this JV to be building and selling cars as early as 2025.

What can Sony bring to the table with a high-volume Japanese automaker? Well, a lot, apparently.

While Honda will likely handle most of the logistics surrounding manufacturing and vehicle development, Sony can share its technological expertise in sensing, imaging, telecommunication, and networking—tools that could prove invaluable in producing a car of the future.

It’s no secret Sony has been toying with the idea of building cars. Sony first showed off its Vision-S concept in 2020, with a follow-up SUV at this past year’s Consumer Electronics Show. As you’d expect, both concepts use battery-electric powertrains and are stuffed with high-end consumer tech.

The deal could still fall apart, but it seems likely both companies have their eyes on their respective prizes. These companies haven’t announced the name of this possible joint venture, but that will likely come as the deal solidifies.

Do you think you’ll have a Sony/Honda EV in your driveway someday? If so, what could this new brand be called? Tell us your thoughts below.
