Texas Tech QB will not return against Texas Longhorns

Texas Tech quarterback Tyler Shough left Saturday’s game against Texas with an injury and head coach Matt Wells confirmed he would not return to action, according to Ryan Mainville of the Dallas Morning News. The exact injury to Shough was unknown at the time of this report. Henry Colombi has entered the game to replace Shough.

A transfer quarterback that came to the Red Raiders from Oregon over the offseason, Shough has started all four games for Texas Tech this year. Through his first three games, he had completed 67.9% of his passes for 804 yards, six touchdowns and two interceptions. But Saturday against the Longhorns, Shough was off to a rocky start.

Shough was 9 of 11 for 68 yards and an interception at the time he left the game. The interception was made by Josh Thompson and returned for a touchdown to put the Longhorns up 28-7 in the second quarter. Shough did not take another snap after that.

Shough made a massive change in the offseason, going from Oregon for the last three seasons to Lubbock, Texas, but the Red Raiders desperately needed a quarterback after Alan Bowman departed from the program. In the limited seven-game Pac-12 season last year, Shough served as the Ducks’ starting quarterback. He completed 63.5% of his passes for 1,559 yards and 13 touchdowns, while throwing six interceptions. He also ran for 271 yards and two touchdowns on the ground. Due to COVID issues at Washington, Oregon got a shot at playing USC in the Pac-12 title game. The Ducks won the conference title, their second straight, in a game where Shough tosses two touchdowns but a mere 91 yards in the air.

Shough was a four-star prospect and the No. 7 pro-style quarterback in the 2018 recruiting class coming out of Chandler, Arizona. Shough chose to play for the Ducks over offers from the likes of North Carolina, Alabama, Georgia, Michigan and others. Shough took eight snaps in his freshman season but maintained his redshirt for the 2019 season.

As a redshirt freshman in 2019, Shough played five games and took 53 snaps. He was 12 of 15 on the year for 144 yards and three touchdowns, while also avoiding throwing any interceptions, playing backup behind Justin Herbert.

Texas led Texas Tech, 42-14 at halftime. Colombi threw an interception on the first possession of the second half, giving the Longhorns a chance to further extend the lead.

The Red Raiders were 3-0 at the start of Big 12 play this year, but some have questioned the test they have been put through. Texas Tech has played Houston, Stephen F. Austin and Florida International, with two of those games at home and one of them in a neutral site game.
