From Road & Track

Welcome to The Grid, R&T’s quick roundup of the auto industry and motorsports news you should know this morning.

The 2022 Nissan Ariya Is a Striking Electric SUV

Nissan is trying to turn things around after years of cranking out stagnant product, and falling profits. Its first big move as part of its turnaround plan is this, the new Ariya electric SUV, and by the looks of it, there may yet be hope for the automaker. The Ariya rides on a new EV platform and will come equipped with either a 65- or a 90-kWh battery pack. The base front-wheel drive version gets 214 from its single motor, while the dual-motor all-wheel drive version puts out nearly 400. Nissan promises up to 300 miles of range, and when it goes on sale next year, it should cost around $40,000.

You can read more about the Ariya at Car and Driver, and I have to say, this is the first new Nissan product I’m excited about in some time.

Texas County Approves Tesla Tax Break

Tesla is looking to build a huge new U.S. factory for the Cybertruck and Model Y, and Travis County, Texas, is working hard to bring in the California company. Bloomberg (via Automotive News) reports that Travis County—home of Austin–has offered Tesla a 70-percent property tax rebate if it builds a factory there. Tesla is also looking at Tulsa, Oklahoma, and hasn’t made a final decision just yet.

Toyota Updates Camry

Remember sedans? Toyota does, and knowing that some people still buy them over SUVs, it decided to upgrade the venerable Camry for 2021. The new Camry gets updated active safety features, plus new trims in and out. There’s also a sporty XSE trim level for the Hybrid model, and the lovely V-6 remains an option. As with the Ariya, you can read more about it over at Car and Driver.
