An Unlikely Smartphone Maker Is Evolving The Ultrawide Camera For 2022

iQoo 9 Pro comes armed with an ultrawide-angle camera that covers a much wider 150-degree panorama in its view, leaving Apple and Samsung far behind.

A relatively unknown smartphone maker named iQoo is equipping its upcoming flagship with an ultrawide-angle camera that offers an industry-leading 150-degree field of view, capturing more of the scene in the image or video frame. LG G5 was the first smartphone to come equipped with a dedicated camera for ultrawide photography back in 2016. The secondary camera could capture a 135-degree field of view, which is impressive even by 2022 standards.

The likes of Samsung followed suit, with the Galaxy S1o from 2019 leading the charge. Apple also jumped the ultrawide camera bandwagon with the debut of the iPhone 11 series. The rest of the smartphone industry quickly embraced the trend, ditching the depth camera in favor of an ultrawide-angle snapper for a dual-camera setup. Unfortunately, the megapixel count was a problem in the early days. The quality of images delivered by the lower-resolution ultra-wide camera was nowhere near those clicked by the primary camera. This aspect also improved over the years, but what hasn’t really changed dramatically is the field of view.

iQoo, a brand that broke off from Vivo, is trying to step up with its upcoming flagship that will debut later this week. The company has officially confirmed on Chinese microblogging platform Weibo that the iQoo 9 Pro will come armed with an ultrawide-angle lens that offers a 150-degree field of views. A larger area of view figure means users will be able to capture a broader view of the scene, fitting in more elements in the final shot. In comparison, the ultrawide-angle camera on the iPhone 13 Pro Max and the Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra only cover a 120-degree field of view. The Xiaomi Mi 11 Ultra goes up to the 128-degree mark, while the Oppo Find X3 Pro can only achieve coverage of 110.3 degrees.

The Big Boys Wait For The Tech To Mature

In addition to offering a significantly broader coverage with its ultrawide-angle camera, the iQoo 9 Pro will also come equipped with a 50-megapixel primary camera that relies on Samsung’s new ISOCELL GN5 imaging sensor. Furthermore, the company has also confirmed a 2K E5 AMOLED panel with a 120Hz refresh rate for its next phone. Moreover, the upcoming phone will also support a blazing fast 120W fast charging and 50W wireless charging to the table. Interestingly, iQoo 9 Pro will be joined in its ultrawide photography revolution by the Realme 2 Pro, which has also been confirmed to pack a snapper with a 150-degree field of view.

However, a camera with a wider field of coverage doesn’t always mean better photos. It depends on a combination of factors, such as the resolution of the camera sensor, the lens aperture, and its underlying assembly, and the software algorithms at play. For example, one of the most significant issues that smartphone makers have to grapple with when it comes to ultrawide-angle cameras is edge distortion. Elements along the frame edges tend to appear distorted and linear elements like buildings might look slant if the hardware and imaging software behind an ultrawide-angle camera haven’t been tuned well.
