Biggest PlayStation Games Releasing In 2022

2022 is sure to bring more blockbuster releases to PlayStation consoles, with a couple of Sony’s longest-running franchises slated to drop. There were some great PlayStation games in 2021, including PS5 exclusives like Returnal and Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart, but Sony hasn’t yet fully transitioned to the new generation. The new year will bring plenty of titles to the PS4 as well, and even those coming only to the new hardware aren’t necessarily exclusive because of planned PC releases.

True PlayStation 5 exclusives like Insomniac Games’ Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 and Wolverine aren’t expected for another year or more, which may give more people the opportunity to actually get their hands on a new console. There also may be projects coming in 2022 that haven’t been officially announced. The original The Last of Us is supposedly getting a remake, and many are still waiting on news about the planned follow-up to FactionsTLOU‘s multiplayer component. Similarly, a Returnal DLC expansion was teased by the game’s developer, and an expansion for Kena: Bridge of Spirits may be in the works as well.

The following are some of the biggest titles coming to PlayStation platforms in 2022. The first two are included because they are expected to be timed console exclusives, launching only on the PS5 and PC, but coming to Xbox at a later date. This means that other, major multi-platform games slated for 2022, such as Elden RingHogwarts LegacyGotham KnightsSuicide Squad: Kill the Justice League, and Dying Light 2 won’t be included. The final three are genuine PlayStation exclusives, all coming out of Sony’s first-party studios and expanding upon a few of the console family’s best series.

2022 PlayStation Games – Forspoken Has A May Release Date

Forspoken Dragon Encounter

From Luminous Productions, a subsidiary of Square Enix, Forspoken first piqued interest because of its definitively next-gen visuals. Since then, info on the game and its open world, magic- and parkour-filled gameplay has slowly been revealed. Players will take control of Frey, a woman mysteriously transported to an alternate realm known as Athia, where a scourge known as the Break has decimated the human population. Arriving in Athia, Frey finds a magical, talking bracelet – which she nicknames “Cuff” – attached to her wrist. As an outsider, Frey seems immune to the Break and may be the only person who can help the last city standing in Athia. The action RPG is expected to arrive on PlayStation 5 and PC on May 25, 2022.

2022 PlayStation Games – Ghostwire: Tokyo

Ghostwire Tokyo Voice Acting

Ghostwire: Tokyo is another timed console exclusive coming to PS5 and PC, but doesn’t have a release window more specific than 2022. Not a whole lot is known about the game, but it’s being developed by Tango Gameworks, a studio previously known for creating both The Evil Within games. Ghostwire: Tokyo is also being published by Bethesda, meaning it joins Deathloop as a game owned by Microsoft releasing on a Sony console first. As a first-person action-adventure game with some elements of horror, Ghostwire: Tokyo places players in the midst of a paranatural crisis, where a large portion of the eponymous city’s population has disappeared, and ghost-like entities known as Visitors have overrun the streets.

2022 PlayStation Games – God Of War Ragnarök

God of War Ragnarok ends the series Norse saga

Arguably the most anticipated PlayStation game of 2022 is God of War Ragnarök, the follow-up to the series’ 2018 soft reboot which brought legendary protagonist Kratos into conflict with the ancient Norse mythological pantheon. Since it began in 2005, the hack-and-slash series was primarily concerned with Greek mythology. However, 2018’s God of War saw Kratos trying to start a new, quiet life in Midgard, and gave the player an over-the-shoulder perspective and some light RPG elements.

After the death of Kratos’ second wife, his plans to stay out of godly squabbles was turned on its head. He was forced into an adventure across the Nine Realms with his son Atreus. God of War Ragnarök will continue the father and son duo’s tale on both PS4 and PS5 – and is expected to release at some point in 2022.

2022 PlayStation Games – Gran Turismo 7 Has A March Release Date

Porsche Gran Turismo 7 Custom Announced

Gran Turismo 7 is another exclusive that was expected to only come to the PlayStation 5 but is also landing on the PS4. The racing series has been a PlayStation staple since 1997 when the first Gran Turismo was released on Sony’s first console. GT7 was first announced at the PS5 reveal event in June 2020, and many grew excited at the possibility of the game supporting all the new hardware’s capabilities. While the adaptive triggers and haptic feedback of the DualSense will be utilized on the PS5 version, GT7 will not include ray tracing during races, only using the advanced lighting techniques during garage sequences and when watching replays. Regardless, early footage of the game looks stunning, and many Gran Turismo fans are excited for a return to the series’ traditional single-player experience when it releases on March 4, 2022.

2022 PlayStation Games – Horizon Forbidden West Has A February Release Date

Horizon Forbidden West's Slitherfang Evolves Series Enemy Design

Guerrilla Games’ Horizon Forbidden West is not only one of the most anticipated PlayStation games of the year, but it’s also one of the first major titles to release in 2022, launching on February 18. Forbidden West is a direct sequel to Horizon Zero Dawn and will see protagonist Aloy journeying to the dangerous, relatively uncharted region which lies to the west of the first game’s map. Aloy will encounter previously un-contacted tribes of humans (some no doubt hostile), and new enemy machines like the Slitherfang and Tremortusk. Early looks at the game indicate there will be fairly significant advancements in Zero Dawn‘s gameplay mechanics, including an expanded skill tree, a number of new weapons, and better melee combat against human enemies. Like Ragnarök and GT7Horizon Forbidden West is launching cross-generationally on both PS4 and PS5.

PlayStation has built a reputation for releasing many high-quality single-player games, and 2022 is poised to continue that trend. The above five games are all dedicated solo experiences coming either exclusively or first to PlayStation consoles. Forspoken and Ghostwire: Tokyo are brand new IPs with a chance to make an impression. God of War RagnarökGran Turismo 7, and Horizon Forbidden West are all returning series – all three expected to be well-received when they launch. Barring any more delays, these five games alone make for a pretty enticing 2022 for PlayStation alongside the numerous multi-platform games also releasing in the new year.
