Blizzard Entertainment’s recently announced survival game may be playable in first-person and may have started development as early as 2017.
Editor’s Note: A lawsuit has been filed against Activision Blizzard by the California Department of Fair Employment and Housing, which alleges the company has engaged in abuse, discrimination, and retaliation against its female employees. Activision Blizzard has denied the allegations. The full details of the Activision Blizzard lawsuit (content warning: rape, suicide, abuse, harassment) are being updated as new information becomes available.
Blizzard Entertainment’s recently teased survival game will be played in first-person and has been in development since 2017 if recent reports are accurate. Blizzard announced the development of its survival game a few days ago in a blog post. The post described the title as “a vast realm of possibility, waiting to be explored” before inviting artists, level designers, and software engineers to join the game’s development team. While the currently embattled company has yet to reveal anything further about its new IP, it did reveal that the game will be coming to both PC and consoles.
A lot has been happening at Blizzard Entertainment over the past year. The company is still dealing with the ongoing scandal involving Activision Blizzard CEO Bobby Kotick, the leadership of some World of Warcraft developers, and allegations of abuse, discrimination, and retaliation against female employees. Then, earlier this year, one of the biggest business moves of 2022 so far occurred when Microsoft announced its intent to acquire Activision Blizzard.
Wccftech reports that the Project Lead Craig Amai’s LinkedIn page shows that he’s been working on the upcoming survival game since 2017, implying that the new IP has been in the works for at least four years, although most of that time was pre-production given that the company just recently sent out its call for more developers to join the team. Additionally, the survival game’s Concept & 3D Character Art Producer Camille Sanford mentioned in a recent tweet that the new IP will be playable in first-person, although it’s still possible that the game will have a third-person mode.
To be working in a whole new universe, on a first person survival game that is certain to be top of the genre is a literal dream come true! #Blizzard #GameDev

One example of a survival game that has both first- and third-person modes built-in is Ark: Survival Evolved, which is scheduled to release its latest expansion, Fjordur, in June. The dinosaur-themed survival game is one of the few currently available titles in the genre that features both first-person and third-person modes. However, other survival games have mods available that allow players to switch between first- and third-person perspectives.
Blizzard Entertainment has historically taken its time to develop brand-new IP. While work on Overwatch began in 2013, three years before its release, it was created from a previous concept that was already in the works for about seven years before it was ultimately canceled. So, even though this new survival game may already be at least four years in the works, it will likely still take some time before fans will see the game’s release.
