Cyberpunk 2077 Is Crashing On PS4 & PC Following Next-Gen Update

After the latest update to CD Projekt Red’s Cyberpunk 2077, some players on PlayStation 4 and PC are reporting that the game is crashing.

It would appear that Cyberpunk 2077 is not completely out of the woods yet, as PS4 and PC players are reporting issues with crashes after the game’s most recent patch. This update, which is the most substantial that the 2020 title has seen since launch, is serving as both a massive content drop and a next-gen upgrade for console versions of the game.

CD Projekt Red surprised gamers earlier this week with a massive 1.5 patch to Cyberpunk 2077. The update came with long-awaited next-gen features like ray-tracing but also offered a host of major improvements and fixes. One of the most notable changes relates to how NPCs behave – they now act far more naturally, interacting with each other, responding to the player character in organic, believable ways, and just generally giving off a sense of realism. Additional content came with the update as well, and many returning players will surely notice new features like the option to purchase and personalize new apartments. Just like with all the previous updates, this 1.5 patch offered general bug and performance fixes on top of these more flashy and meaty offerings.

By and large, gamers seem to be loving this update, but some PC and PS4 players might be missing out for now. As reported by Polygon, CD Projekt Red has begun investigating reports of crashes on these platforms following the release of the patch on Tuesday, as some players are claiming that the PS4 disc version of Cyberpunk 2077 will not launch. Problems of this kind don’t appear to be limited to just consoles, either, as PC players are reporting that the game is crashing for them as well. CD Projekt Red is still looking into these problems, but the studio has traced the PC crashes to specific audio software and is recommending that players disable the drivers on this software for the best experience.

Cyberpunk 2077 Patch 1.5

It will be interesting to see what the backlash will look like following these reports if there is any at all. It appears that the experience of the game is greatly improved for most gamers playing on PS5 and Xbox Series X, so it will likely come down to how the pros of the 1.5 patch weigh against the cons. If these problems can be totally and swiftly fixed, it will probably help the Polish studio from a PR standpoint.

For many gamers, Cyberpunk 2077 and CD Projekt Red as a whole are on a sort of probationary period. New, free content and sweeping bug fixes are certainly appreciated by many, but there is almost no margin for error when a game’s launch is as contentious as Cyberpunk‘s. There’s no doubt that CD Projekt Red is aware of this fact, so fans will have to hope that the developers can continue to improve the game so that it leaves behind a respectable legacy.
