MLB The Show 22 will be available on Nintendo Switch for the first time in franchise history and will have crossplay across Xbox and PlayStation.
After speculation that the game was delayed, MLB The Show 22 finally announced the release date of April 5, 2022, with crossplay available to players over multiple platforms at launch. For the first time in MLB The Show franchise history, MLB The Show 22 will be available on Nintendo Switch. Xbox compatibility for MLB The Show was first introduced with MLB The Show 21, and MLB The Show 22 continues the trend of adding additional console compatibility for the second year in a row. The game will be available on Switch, PlayStation, and Xbox at launch, however, no port to PC is currently planned.
From the day of its release, MLB will have cross-platform play. Players on PlayStation will require a PlayStation Plus subscription for online multiplayer play. In addition to being cross-platform MLB The Show 22 will have cross-progression, allowing players to enjoy the game while saving their progress across multiple console platforms. It’s not currently possible to purchase a multi-platform version of MLB The Show 22, so players will need to purchase it for each console they plan to play on. However, for Xbox players, MLB The Show 22 will be on Xbox Game Pass from day one of its release.
MLB The Show 22 is available for pre-order now, ahead of its early April release, and will cost $59.99. Players with next-gen consoles like the Xbox Series X/S or PS5 can purchase a next-gen edition of the game for $69.99 or, if they already own the current-gen version, they can purchase a $10 digital upgrade to get the next-gen version. The slightly more expensive next-gen version of MLB The Show 22 will offer 4K resolution, compatible with a 4K HDR TV or display, allowing next-gen console owners to experience MLB The Show better on PS5 & Xbox Series X. MLB The Show will also be available on older Xbox and PlayStation consoles including Xbox One and PlayStation 4.
MLB The Show 22 Is On PlayStation, Xbox & Switch For First Time
All versions of MLB The Show 22 will support cross-progression and crossplay, with the exception of content exclusive to the current-generation version of the game. This will be the first time in the baseball game franchise’s history that players on Xbox, PlayStation, and Switch will be able to play an MLB The Show game together, thanks to online multiplayer and cross-platform play. This is a surprising move, as MLB The Show 22 is developed by Sony’s San Diego Studio, and Sony has been criticized for being anti-consumer when it comes to crossplay, in a bid to encourage players to play solely on PlayStation.
MLB The Show baseball game franchise embracing cross-platform play and adding more console support year on year is a promising sign that Sony may be easing off its anti-crossplay rhetoric. For the first time in franchise history, MLB The Show fans can enjoy the game on more platforms than ever before, including current and next-gen PlayStation, Xbox, and Nintendo Switch consoles. Many fans were disappointed MLB The Show 22 didn’t have one highly sought-after feature: an MLB The Show game playable on PC. However, as MLB The Show 22 is coming to Xbox Game Pass on day one, hopefully, a future installment in the series will be ported to PC and available on Xbox Game Pass for PC.
