Elden Ring is getting review bombed on PC, with many players frustrated with its poor optimization and frame rate issues even on high-performance PCs.
FromSoftware’s highly-acclaimed Elden Ring is getting review bombed on Steam, as many players are unhappy with the game’s poor PC optimization. Millions of players have already jumped into Elden Ring’s dark fantasy open world, exploring the wide variety of areas and encountering new Souls-like bosses likely to provide a massive challenge. Within its first hour on Steam Elden Ring amassed over 600k players, proving that few want to miss what could be 2022’s greatest launch.
Elden Ring’s other reviews are far from modest, with many gaming outlets and publications singing praise for FromSoftware’s new action RPG. Many reviewers were blown away by the game’s combat system, which shares many facets with previous FromSoftware games, save for a few new mechanics like jumping. The world design and Elden Ring’s in-depth fantasy lore have also been the focal point of its positive reception, and some claim the game is a shoo-in for Game of the Year 2022. Near-perfect scores from multiple outlets seem to corroborate that response, and earlier this week, Elden Ring was OpenCritic’s highest-rated game of all time. Even though it’s fallen in the rankings slightly, most professional reviewers agree that FromSoftware has crafted a masterpiece.
Despite its Metacritic score of 97, some don’t agree with Elden Ring’s high acclaim. As pointed out by The Gamer, Elden Ring is getting review bombed on Steam by unhappy players, largely due to stuttering issues, frame rate drops, and apparent crashes, even on high-performance PCs. Elden Ring is currently sitting at “Mixed” on Steam with over 20,000 reviews. Many of the game’s PC players are frustrated with Elden Ring’s PC performance, with some also disappointed by its lack of ultrawidescreen support and poor PC optimization.
Elden Ring is performing well beyond the PC, with its console ports demonstrating FromSoftware’s technical chops. While it’s believed Elden Ring PS4 provides a better frame rate, at least on PS5, console players have little to complain about in terms of the action RPG’s performance. The native PS5 version reportedly fluctuates between 45 and 60fps. In terms of Elden Ring’s PC performance, there have been some fan suggestions in terms of fixing its visual difficulties, and official fixes and patches are currently in the works from the developer.
Elden Ring has seemingly broken the trend in modern gaming with a near-perfect launch, despite some technical issues. With high praise from reviewers and massive sales, FromSoftware has achieved what most recent AAA launches failed to – developers meeting player expectations. That being said, technical issues are extremely frustrating. While FromSoftware released a patch for Elden Ring at launch, aimed at fixing player controls and frame rate drops under certain conditions, it seems more fixes are still needed. With the team confirmed to be working on this, it’s hoped the new Elden Ring patch will be live soon, so players on all platforms can properly enjoy what could be FromSoftware’s greatest achievement.
