Elden Ring Officially Verified On Steam Deck
Gamers are patiently waiting for both Elden Ring and the Steam Deck. Thankfully, compatibility between these two releases has been confirmed.
The very-soon-to-be-released Elden Ring will be compatible with Valve’s Steam Deck, making it playable on-the-go. Advance reviews of the game rolled out earlier this week, and already it looks like Elden Ring is one of the most acclaimed video games of all time.
Fans of PC gaming got some welcome news last year when legendary video game company Valve revealed the Steam Deck: a handheld gaming PC similar to the Nintendo Switch, only much more powerful. The device will be shipping out to gamers over the next few days, but players have already been digging into the subject of game availability. While the Steam Deck is a respectable piece of equipment, it will obviously not be a 1:1 replacement for a high-end gaming PC, and so not every single release will be easily accessed on the system. Considering the popularity of FromSoftware’s challenging and strange games, some fans have likely been wondering if the next title from this legendary Japanese studio will make its way to Valve’s handheld system. Interestingly enough, the Steam Deck is being released on the same day as Elden Ring.
Gamers may never know for sure if this shared release date was serendipitous or planned, but one thing is clear: Elden Ring will be compatible with the Steam Deck. As pointed out by Wario64 on Twitter, the game will be playable on the handheld according to Steam’s “Steam Deck Compatibility” feature. In addition to being playable, Elden Ring will display Steam Deck controller icons. The compatibility notice goes on to state that the game will “perform well” on its default settings when running on the console– so maxed-out graphics settings might be out of the question for Steam Deck users.
While traditional PCs and consoles like the PS5 might run Elden Ring better than the Steam Deck, this is still a great option for FromSoftware fans on the go. Aside from 2018’s Dark Souls: Remastered on the Switch, there haven’t been any official ways to play FromSoftware games on a portable device. For gamers looking to test their mettle against menacing foes in waiting rooms or during their commute, this news will surely come as a welcome surprise.
Still, there’s a pretty good chance that most players will be enjoying Elden Ring on PC and console; gaming hardware has been notoriously difficult to get a hold of over the past few years, and the Steam Deck could follow that same trend. However, for those who are able to pick up a Steam Deck on day one, handheld Elden Ring gameplay might be in the cards.
