Elden Ring Steam Cloud Error Causes PC Players To Lose Progress

A Steam Cloud error is causing some Elden Ring players on PC to lose in-game progress by accidentally having them overwrite previous saves.

Issues with the PC version of Elden Ring continue thanks to a new Steam Cloud error that is now causing players to lose their save data and forcing them to either completely start over or continue with chunks of their in-game progress missing. FromSoftware’s latest action role-playing game Elden Ring launched last week to almost universal critical acclaim, becoming one of the highest-rated games in history. While reviews celebrated it upon launch, the title also received some criticism due to technical issues that were left unaddressed by its developers. Most importantly, Elden Ring suffered performance issues that prevented many from playing, even players running the game on high-end PCs. Players reported poor graphical performance despite having computer specs above the recommended level.

SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY

Elden Ring peaked at more than 600,000 players on Steam within the first hour of launch but was shortly met with aggrieved players who review bombed the title on Steam largely due to stuttering issues, frame rate drops, and sudden crashes. Upon release, the title carried “Mixed” reviews on Steam despite being one of the best-rated games of all time. However, since then, FromSoftware has released minor Elden Ring patches to fix many of the third-person action RPG’s issues and the title now sits at “Very Positive,” despite several remaining issues.

As reported by IGN, an ongoing Steam Cloud issue is causing players to lose their Elden Ring save data. When attempting to play the game on Steam, players are met with a prompt screen asking if they’d like to download their cloud save or upload their local save. The cloud’s data synchronization is out of date, however, and players who choose this option can accidentally download their saves from hours or even days earlier. This will overwrite their most current save data, causing them to lose hours of progress or completely forcing them to start over. While several players have shown their frustration over the issue on social media, publisher Bandai Namco acknowledged the issue on Twitter and has created a tutorial to easily avoid the issue until it is fixed.

Although suffering from technical difficulties on PC, FromSoftware’s newest title continues to break records. Recent analytics have revealed that Elden Ring is the third most-viewed game on Twitch in recent history. Receiving almost 900,000 views upon release, the title additionally topped the peak Twitch viewership of FromSoftware games by almost triple, with the studio’s previous game, Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice, peaking at only 280,000 viewers.

Of course, these numbers could possibly increase as the PC version of Elden Ring becomes more stable over time. The conversation about Elden Ring‘s technical issues has been the focus of most criticism for the title. It could worsen if FromSoftware doesn’t release patches to rejuvenate its PC version soon. Players are currently warned to be careful when playing the Steam version of the game and choosing how to load a save until the Steam Cloud data synchronization issue has been resolved.
