Volvo XC40 Recharge Caravan and Motorhome 2022 Awards
The Skoda Enyaq iV won the 2022 Towcar gong for caravans weighing under 1,100kg. It was also named the top EV in the awards.
The pure electric XC40 Recharge has been named Towcar of the Year in the 1,500-1,700kg caravan weight category. This covers many of the most family-friendly large caravans sold in the UK.
The success for two popular EVs follows growing awareness from Caravan and Motorhome Club members into the need to go electric.
Nick Lomas, director general of the Club, said: “We’ve been receiving an increasing number of enquiries about the technicalities and practicalities of towing with hybrid and electric vehicles, so it’s fantastic to see a boom in competition entrants and winners in these categories.”

Skoda Enyaq iV
It was the Skoda Enyaq iV 80 Lounge, with the 82kWh battery and single-motor 204hp drivetrain, that scooped the Caravan and Motorhome Club EV award.
Judges were clearly impressed, saying: “Goodness, this is a phenomenal car. It’s big enough for a family and their luggage, and it’s great to look at.”
Zero to 60mph when towing a caravan takes 11.7 seconds, and it decelerates from 60mph to rest in 57.7 metres – again when towing an 1,100kg caravan.

Judges described the XC40 as a “super-impressive pure battery electric SUV that combines stunning performance with precision low-speed manoeuvrability” and said it was “outrageously good, a complete thrill to drive”.
With almost 400hp, the XC40 Recharge is seriously powerful for a tow car. Even when hitched to a caravan, it can do 0-60mph in a scant 7.4 seconds.
A more important criteria for caravanners is how well vehicles cope in extreme hill-start situations. The judges described the XC40 Recharge’s performance here as “flawless”.
Volvo is no stranger to success in the Tow Car of the Year competition: the XC60 won the overall award in 2019, followed by the XC40 in the 2022 awards.
