Eufy 2k Wired Video Doorbell Review

The Takeaway: Eufy’s 2k Wired Video Doorbell is a great option if you don’t want, or need, a subscription-based model that requires monthly or annual fees. It stores all data locally, sending nothing to the cloud. And, as long as it’s connected to your Wi-Fi, you can answer the doorbell, review events, and change settings with a smartphone from anywhere. Perhaps the best part is that installation and setup are very simple.

No Subscription-Based Monitoring or Cloud Storage

My main reasons for getting a video doorbell are to monitor package deliveries and discourage porch pirates. Eufy’s 2k Wired Video Doorbell was the ideal solution in my case, as I didn’t want to pay for a monitoring service or cloud storage, but I did want advanced features like activity zones, exclusion zones, and the ability to view recorded events (i.e. anything the doorbell decides to record based on my settings). Eufy provides these out of the box, while you need to sign up for a subscription or cloud storage to use them with some other brands. Eufy’s 2k Wired Video Doorbell stores all video it records locally, keeping footage of your property off the cloud if that’s a concern of yours.

I’ve used the app to answer the doorbell remotely. But due to my job testing products (and my family’s shopping habit), I receive a lot of mail. So I mostly use the video doorbell to alert me to deliveries, allow me to check on the packages, and as a deterrent for porch pirates—it lights up when it detects motion and begins recording, so they’ll know they’ve been seen.

You can adjust motion detection sensitivity between only detecting people, or any type of movement.

You can set the activity zone, where motion will trigger a recoding, by dragging the white nodes. Here I have it set to capture movement in my driveway, but not on the parallel roadway beyond.

You can easily, via the app, adjust the camera’s sensitivity for activation and the zone in which motion triggers its recording. I had to dial it in over a couple of weeks so that it didn’t record too many non-events—like traffic on the road or leaves blowing by—while not missing actual things I wanted to capture.

When the doorbell detects motion, it records video and stores it locally in the doorbell. You can then replay it on your phone through the Eufy Security app.

Regarding all those event videos the doorbell captures and stores locally: You don’t have to manage any of them. When its storage is full, the 2k automatically overwrites the oldest video. In my case, it stores about a month and a half of recordings. If your doorbell activates more frequently, that length of time will go down. And, if there are events you need to save, you can download and save them to your smartphone.

    Installation is Uber-Easy

Two screws fasten the mounting bracket, and two screws secure the doorbell wires.

If you’re replacing an existing doorbell, Eufy’s 2k Wired Video Doorbell should take you less than 30 minutes to install and set up. I downloaded the free Eufy Security app on my smartphone, and it walked me through the steps without issue though a series of prompts. Most traditional doorbells use two screws to fasten to your house, and two more connect the wires that power the doorbell. Eufy’s Wired Video Doorbell is no different. I used two screws to fasten the mounting plate to the house, connected the two wires to the video doorbell terminals, and snapped the doorbell on the mounting plate. That was it.

I’ve now installed two of these wired video doorbells, and I didn’t encounter any setup issues with either one. That’s not to say you won’t, though—it is possible. The most likely will have to do with the voltage of your existing transformer. And if that’s an issue, the app will tell you. The good news is that if you have this problem, it’s easy to fix. Eufy’s 2k Wired Video Doorbell will work with power from 16 to 24 volts. If your voltage is lower, or if your existing doorbell transformer is so far away that voltage drops too much, you can easily replace the transformer.

I actually didn’t have an existing doorbell in my own home, so I installed an inexpensive tri-volt transformer that supplies 10, 16, or 24 volts. I set mine at 24, and if your transformer is far from the doorbell, definitely use the higher voltage.
