Every Character Revealed In Disney Speedstorm Trailer

Fans of titles like Nintendo’s Mario Kart series have something new to look forward to this summer as Asphalt developer Gameloft announces their Disney and Pixar-based racing game, Disney Speedstorm, which promises to be full of many Disney and Pixar characters. The game has been described as a battle-racing-oriented arcade experience, and it will support both online and split-screen cross-platform multiplayer when it releases in mid-2022. Currently, it’s confirmed to be coming to the Nintendo Switch and PC, with more consoles set to be announced in the future. Alongside a selection of racetracks inspired by classic Disney films and franchises, some well-known characters have been confirmed to be playable thanks to Disney Speedstorm‘s reveal trailer.

SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY

The trailer was released as part of February 2022’s Nintendo Direct presentation, which was the company’s first Nintendo Direct of the year. It was about 40 minutes long and crammed top to bottom with new game reveals, trailers, and gameplay footage of upcoming titles and Switch ports. Other big news included a broad release date for Splatoon 3, the announcement of Valve’s Portal: Companion Collection, and the release of both Earthbound and Earthbound Beginnings on Nintendo Switch Online.

Snippets of gameplay were put on display during Disney Speedstorm‘s trailer, showcasing each character’s unique skill on the track as well as some of the settings and characters already confirmed. Additionally, Disney Speedstorm will revolve in large part around seasonal content much like Fortnite or Halo Infinite‘s multiplayer seasons, and new additions to the game will be brought in with each subsequent release. Prospective players can already pre-register on the official Disney Speedstorm website to get early access to development updates and other sneak peeks.

Mickey Mouse Is Disney Speedstorm’s Most Predictable Racer

Perhaps the most unsurprising character to appear in the Disney Speedstorm is the company mascot himself, Mickey Mouse. Mickey has been a playable character in dozens of Disney-based video games, and it seems only fitting that he should be one of the first confirmed racers in the upcoming arcade game. His car gets some time in the trailer’s spotlight, covered in red-and-yellow decals to match his iconic color scheme. He also gets the chance to showcase his combat skills, as he previously did in Disney’s Epic Mickey franchise ten years ago. One of his abilities sees him conducting magic like a scene right out of Disney’s Fantasia, creating a wave of devastating effects along the racetrack behind him.

Donald Duck Is Disney Speedstorm’s Other Classic Character

It’s hard to find Mickey without at least one other classic Disney character close by, and in Disney Speedstorm that character happens to be Donald Duck. Though the trailer doesn’t demonstrate much in the way of his ability, like every other character in the game he’ll have his own unique skills for players to master. He can also be leveled up alongside Disney Speedstorm‘s other playable characters, and some of the stats featured in the Nintendo Direct include Top Speed, Acceleration, Handling, Boost, and Defense.

Sulley Is Disney Speedstorm’s Pixar Representation

Every Character Revealed In Disney Speedstorm Trailer Sulley

As of the trailer released during February’s Nintendo Direct, there’s only one Pixar character explicitly confirmed as a playable character in Disney Speedstorm, and it’s Sulley from Monster’s Inc. He has the ability to unleash a powerful roar that knocks opponents caught within its radius up into the air, potentially costing them valuable seconds in the race. One design choice that’s interesting to note is the fact that Sulley is sporting a brand-new outfit for Disney Speedstorm, and in the trailer, he can be seen wearing a fairly standard racing jumpsuit with his name displayed across the back.

Jack Sparrow Gets Animated For Disney Speedstorm

The only live-action character Disney fans will be able to spot in the Disney Speedstorm trailer is Jack Sparrow from the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise, previously seen on the Nintendo Switch in the Kingdom Hearts trilogy. In Disney Speedstorm, however, he’s taken on an animated appearance that aligns more with the other playable racers. He’s been similarly animated in previous games like Disney Infinity, so the change isn’t necessarily surprising. One of his skills is featured in the Nintendo Direct trailer, as well, and he can be seen swinging glowing green swords around his head, presumably taking out any opponents that get caught up in his path.

The game’s website does state that knowing how to handle each racer’s abilities isn’t enough to guarantee victory, however. The precise timing of nitro boosts and drifting around corners are both strategies that can make the difference between a win and a loss, as well. Like many other popular racing games such as Forza Horizon 5, players will need to know how to optimally handle every area of Disney Speedstorm‘s individual tracks if they want to take first place.

Mulan Is One Of Disney Speedstorm’s Princess Characters

As one of the more experienced fighters in the official Disney Princess lineup, Mulan has appeared in everything from Kingdom Hearts 2 to Disney Sorcerer’s Arena and Disney Heroes: Battle Mode. Now, it appears she’s joining the ranks of other iconic characters as a Disney Speedstorm racer. Her car, the Dragon Flame, is evidently named after her sidekick Mushu from Disney’s Mulan film, and her combat ability involves setting off fireworks along the track.

Disney Speedstorm’s Other Large Racer Is The Beast

Even though he’s not featured heavily in the Nintendo Direct spotlight, The Beast can be spotted in silhouette in the Disney Speedstorm release trailer. The fact that both Beast and Sulley are included as playable characters does indicate that Disney Speedstorm‘s developers aren’t exclusively considering human-sized characters when building up the game’s roster, and in the future, it’s possible that even larger racers or smaller additions like Chip and Dale could be added as the game’s seasons progress.

Belle Seems To Appear In The Disney Speedstorm Trailer

Though likewise not officially confirmed, one of the characters spotted in the background of the Disney Speedstorm announcement trailer holds an uncanny resemblance to Belle, perhaps making her the second Beauty and the Beast character in the game. Her addition to the racing roster wouldn’t be all that surprising seeing as she’s appeared as a fighter in the Disney Mirrorverse mobile action RPG, and it’s quite likely that she won’t be the last Disney princess to appear in Disney Speedstorm, either, given the popularity of the franchise.

Of course, these are far from the only characters coming to the game, and the full starting lineup will probably be announced in the coming months ahead of Disney Speedstorm‘s summer release. There are, after all, quite a few unidentifiable racers speeding along in the background of several gameplay shots. For the time being, though, Disney fans and racing game enthusiasts alike at least have the chance to comb through the trailer looking for any details they might have missed.
