Final Fantasy 7 Remake Intergrade PC Review: The Definitive Edition

Final Fantasy VII Remake Intergrade on PC has all of the DLC content from the PS5 version of the game, along with a number of graphical options.

Final Fantasy VII Remake Intergrade is an action RPG developed and published by Square Enix. The game has finally arrived on PC as an Epic Games Store exclusive, and it’s the total package in terms of content, as well as featuring a number of graphical options that allow the game to surpass the visuals in the PS5 version of FF7 Remake.

FF7 Remake is a modern remake of the classic JRPG that appeared on the original PlayStation back in ’97, though it’s only the first part in what will be a much larger series. The story focuses on Cloud Strife, a former member of the elite SOLDIER unit, who now works as a mercenary. Cloud soon comes face to face with his past, as he is haunted by visions of Sephiroth, a former war hero who died under mysterious circumstances, yet continues to manifest in Cloud’s mind.

FF7 Remake on PC is based on the Intergrade version of the game that launched on PS5 in 2021, including the pre-order DLC content. This means that it includes the base game, the INTERmission DLC storyline that stars Yuffie from FF7, all of the DLC content from the base game, and the DLC for INTERmission. The PC version has all of the content released for FF7 Remake so far, making it the equivalent of a definitive edition.

The PC version of FF7 Remake has way more graphical settings than the PS5 version of the game. The PS5 version of FF7 Remake only had Quality and Performance mode options, and brightness levels. The PC version has a number of different resolution options, ranging from 1280×720 to 3840×2160, low/high settings for textures and shadows, an option to choose between SDR and HDR, and support for up 120fps. The player can also set the number of NPCs that can appear on the screen when in towns, in order to squeeze even more performance out of the game.

The visuals of the game easily match the PS5 version of FF7 Remake, and it’s possible to equal the PS4 version when using lower settings for people on weaker machines. The game is still a technical showcase, however, and running it on the highest settings is demanding. FF7 Remake might have been the best-looking game on the PS4, and the PC version is able to make it look even better, so long as the player has the hardware to pull it off.

One new addition to FF7 Remake that doesn’t work quite as well is mouse and keyboard controls. The game is an action RPG, with more of a focus on the former, as the player needs to actively dodge and block attacks. FF7 Remake has a lot of commands to keep track of, alongside moving the character, which is a lot to focus on when it’s spread around the keyboard. The game is still playable in this way, especially when using the easier Classic difficulties that keep track of the basic actions of each character, but FF7 Remake is a lot smoother with a controller.

Square Enix did an amazing job with the port of FF7 Remake on PC. The game runs like a dream and can exceed the console versions in terms of visuals and performance, with a beefy PC. The keyboard controls are functional, but the game was originally designed with a controller in mind, so there’s only so much that can be done in this regard. FF7 Remake on PC is the total package in terms of content and performance, and the people who have waited patiently for the game can be assured that the PC version is a high-quality offering, with a more complete version of the story than what was available in the PS4 version at launch.
