God of War’s Never Looked Better Thanks to Ray Tracing Shader on PC

The Beyond All Limits ray tracing preset on PC allows SIE Santa Monica Studio’s award-winning God of War (2018) title to look even better.

Thanks to the Beyond All Limits ray tracing preset on PC, the beauty in God of War (2018) shines a little brighter. God of War launched on PC late last week and quickly climbed to the top of the Steam charts. Over the weekend, the action-packed title boasted an impressive 73,000 concurrent users at its peak, reaching a maximum player count higher than that of Horizon: Zero Dawn and Days Gone.

The God of War PC port is rather impressive all things considered. This version of Kratos’ and Atreus’ award-winning adventure features true 4K visuals, for example, along with unlocked frame rates and support for NVIDIA’s and Reflex low latency and Deep Learning Super Sampling (DLSS) technologies. Impressively, God of War on PC also sports ultra-widescreen at a 21:9 aspect ratio. One noteworthy absence, however, is ray-traced lighting and reflections, something that ray tracing mods now mean to rectify.

Without native ray tracing support, God of War PC players interested in the lighting technique must rely on shaders created by the likes of Pascal Gilcher. As spotted by Wccftech, YouTuber Digital Dreams used the ray tracing shader and other mods to build a Beyond All Limits preset that adds yet another visual boost to the most recent God of War experience. (It’s worth noting that Digital Dreams’ preset is locked behind a paywall on Patreon.) Check out the YouTuber’s “Ultra+ graphics showcase” in the video linked below:

While some claim these enhancements make God of War look even more incredible, others say they can’t spot the difference. In the absence of a comparison video from Digital Dreams, the naked eye may not be able to discern the overall improvements. The title still looks incredible, though, as this version especially outshines its counterpart on PS4 and PS5.

God of War’s success on PC could serve as just the beginning of a strong year for the Santa Monica Studio-created brand. Notably, the expectation is that God of War: Ragnarök will hit PS4 and PS5 consoles sometime this year, though the studio and Sony have yet to announce a firm release window. The sequel last took center stage during PlayStation’s September 2021 showcase, which featured the first official gameplay reveal and confirmation of the Ragnarok subtitle. At present, it remains a mystery as to when more of the follow-up entry will be shown.
