Here’s what you need to know about RI’s new COVID-19 vaccination app

Gov. Dan McKee and the Rhode Island Department of Health on Monday announced that the Crush COVID RI mobile application had been updated so vaccinated Rhode Islanders can display their COVID-19 vaccination status via cellphones, tablets and other devices.

Here are some questions and answers about getting the app and using it:

What does the app do?

It enables Rhode Islanders who have received a COVID-19 vaccination to access their verified record via information on file at portal.ri.gov with the touch of a button.

How can I get the app?

The update to the application, 401Health, is available through the Apple App store and on the Google Play store in English and Spanish depending on smartphone settings. Gov. Dan McKee said, “I have downloaded my vaccination card to my phone and it was very simple.”

How much does it cost?

Nothing. It’s free.

Do I have to get the app?

No, but it might make your life easier. Rhode Island implemented a renewed mask mandate Monday that requires masking, regardless of vaccination status, in venues that hold more than 250 people. Owners of smaller venues, such as restaurants and stores, can allow customers to go without masks, as long as they show proof of vaccination.

What should business owners do?

Businesses, churches and venue operators can visit the Apple App Store or Google Play to learn how to download a free, compatible QR reader to scan the phone screens of people who’ve been vaccinated and are using the app.

Is Rhode Island the only state doing this?

No, Rhode Island is joining seven other states, including California, Colorado and New Jersey, and numerous other nations. Pharmacies such as CVS, Walgreens, Rite Aid and Walmart are also using the same secure technology for record standardization. Connecticut and Massachusetts are also developing their apps.

Dr. Tom McCarthy, executive director of the state Health Department’s COVID Response Unit, said last week, “We have been working for quite some time for the right national standard that will allow Rhode Islanders to travel nationally, internationally, and be recognized as a group for their vaccination status.”

Can I still use the CDC-issued paper record of my vaccination?

Yes. The digital record is meant to be convenient and more durable.
