Among the upgrades on this year’s iPhones, the highlight has been the camera improvement that Apple has introduced over the iPhone 12 series. New image sensors have been used throughout the four models and all of them now come with sensor-shift stabilization. The result – iPhone 13 phones are ranking very high on the best smartphone cameras list.
We recently reviewed the cameras on the iPhone 13 Pro and iPhone 13 Pro Max and found them to be mighty impressive over last year’s model, or any other smartphone in general. They deliver better detailing and colours than ever before and are now able to perform well even under low lighting conditions.
The improvement has now been reflected in numbers, in a review of the new iPhones by DxOMark. The benchmark website recently reviewed the cameras on the iPhone 13 Pro and iPhone 13 mini and posted their scores in its list of top-performing smartphone cameras. The rankings are intriguing, if not surprising for many.
The iPhone 13 Pro (review) managed to rank number fourth on the all-time list by DxOMark. The new iPhone ranks just under Huawei P50 Pro, Mi 11 Ultra and Huawei Mate 40 Pro+ in terms of overall camera performance. It received a total camera score of 137 and a selfie camera score of 99. For reference, the Huawei P50 Pro tops the list with a score of 144 and 106.
Many might say that this was expected. What might come as a surprise to those, is that the budget iPhone 13 mini ranks higher than last year’s Apple flagship – the iPhone 12 Pro Max on the list.
The iPhone 13 mini got an overall score of 130 on the list and a score of 99 for its selfie camera. In comparison, the iPhone 12 Pro Max was limited to a 98 score on its selfie camera. Though the overall score is same for both the iPhones at 130, the iPhone 13 mini beats the 12 Pro Max due to the selfie score.
Now you might wonder how this could be, considering that the iPhone 13 mini ships with a dual-camera as opposed to the iPhone 12 Pro Max’s triple-lens setup.
The answer to this surfaces when we delve into the depths of these scores. There are different aspects in which the iPhones take lead by turn. The iPhone 12 Pro Max, for instance, is better at zooming with its extra telephoto lens. Though the iPhone 13 mini scores better on videos with the improvements introduced in Apple’s A15 chipset.
Both the devices have an equal score of 138 for photos, with the iPhone 13 mini beating the 12 Pro Max in aspects like exposure, colour and night light, The 12 Pro Max makes up for the loss with better noise removal, autofocus and bokeh shots.
It thus seems like the camera upgrades on the new iPhones are worth the claims that Apple has been making about them till now. It will be interesting to see how the iPhone 13 Pro Max ranks on this list. In our review, we found the new Apple flagship to be a substantial upgrade over previous iPhone iterations.
