Madness Returns Is Back On Steam After 5 Years

Alice: Madness Returns, sequel to American McGee’s Alice, is once again available to buy on Steam after being delisted over five years ago.

Psychological cult horror game classic Alice: Madness Returns is now available to buy on Steam again after being delisted in 2016, over five years ago. A new game in the Alice series, Alice: Asylum, has been in the works for some years from developer American McGee, but fans have been hoping for a new way to experience the original – and its sequel – for perhaps longer.

Spicy Horse Games’ Alice: Madness Returns released across Xbox 360, PS3, and both Steam and EA’s own Origin launchers for PC in 2011, and has been since been included as part of the EA Play subscription, which also made it available on the Xbox Game Pass. It was removed from Steam by EA when its license expired in September 2016 in an attempt to incentivize purchases from its own Origin service. The game is a sequel to American McGee’s Alice and chronicles a far darker take on the characters and world of Lewis Carroll’s Alice In Wonderland, with Alice Liddel portrayed as a young woman determined to restore her sanity and uncover the truth behind her family’s death by venturing into a gothic and twisted-looking video game Wonderland.

The news of Alice: Madness Returns‘ Steam availability was confirmed by American McGee on Twitter, who praised someone only referred to as “B” for being a “one-man crusade” in making the resurrection and Steam relaunch possible. As well as being available for purchase on Steam, fans of the cult classic horror can also get their hands on the game through Xbox Game Pass for PC, via EA Play.

American McGee’s Alice games have countless fans, and news of Madness Returns‘ Steam availability has led many to hope for the original Alice to finally come to the platform. An HD version of the 2000 game was initially included with Alice: Madness Returns as part of the Complete Edition on Origin, but was never released on Steam. The Complete Edition has also become hard to come by since its removal from Origin, further adding to the frustration of those wanting to experience the full story.

Alice: Madness Returns has a Very Positive rating on Steam, and for PC fans who want to return to McGee’s dark take on Wonderland, or missed the chance the first time around, Alice’s return to the platform is very welcome. Of course, as with renewed interest in any game franchise, many fans are looking to the future of the series and are wondering if Alice: Madness Returns‘ revival could lead to more news on Alice: Asylum.
