PC Maker Meta Says It Will Give Its Trademark To Facebook For $20 Million

Meta PC has the ‘Meta’ trademark for most general tech categories, but the company’s founders are willing to sell it to Facebook for $20 million.

PC maker Meta wants $20 million from Mark Zuckerberg for Facebook to own the trademark. Facebook announced that it would be rebranding its parent company to Meta to better fit the company’s broader vision for a mixed reality future. The company wants to branch out and create the Metaverse, a mixed reality world that lets users work, play and navigate life with the help of virtual reality tech.

Part of the reasoning for the name change could be related to the scrutiny the company has been getting from regulators and users alike over Facebook’s mishandling of user privacy and data. Users have been critical for a long while now over how Facebook allegedly does not care about user privacy. Regulators have issues over how the company runs as well.

But surprise! That’s not all. TMZ is reporting that PC maker Meta has the name trademarked and has been operating under the name Meta for at least a year now. Meta co-founders Joe Darger and Zack Shutt say they are willing to sell the trademark to Zuckerberg and co for a hefty $20 million. Of course, a portion of the money will help the co-founders rebrand to the new company.

It’s Just Meta

The PC makers are having a fun time on Twitter with the ordeal as well. The memes are hysterical, saying, “to reflect who we are and what we hope to build, we are proud to announce that we are now ‘Facebook.'” Poking fun at the fact that Facebook rebranded due to their ambition in the AR/VR space.

While it’s all fun and games right now, Facebook has an uphill battle as there are tons of companies out there that have been using the “Meta” name in the past. In addition, the company will likely be fighting many of the lawsuits in the coming years as smaller businesses come out of the woodwork to try and get a slice of that Facebook money pie. The whole situation with the Facebook brand seems to be a big joke at this point.

Rightfully so, for a long while, Facebook has been known by most as the social network for conspiracy theories and the older folks. It’s not “hip” to be on or use Facebook in this day and age. Most of the younger generation are typically on other platforms such as TikTok, Reddit, Instagram, or Snapchat. So Facebook rebranding to Meta and other companies trying to prevent the company from rebranding is comical.
