Lore Friendly Rifles of Skyrim does exactly what its name says by introducing 13-types of rifles and 8-types of ammo to the land of the Nords.
A new mod for The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim introduces lore-friendly firearms to the land of the Nords. 2021 marked the game’s 10-year anniversary and developer Bethesda chose to mark the occasion by re-releasing yet another version of the prolific open-world RPG dubbed the Skyrim Anniversary Edition.
A major contributor to Skyrim‘s longevity is the vast array of mods a dedicated and hardworking portion of the community has generated over the past decade. These add-ons take an already massive title and incorporate a multitude of new in-game possibilities ranging from totally absurd to extremely grounded. One of the more recent additions to the ever-expanding Skyrim mod library falls in the latter category by introducing a new type of weapon to the medieval fantasy setting: firearms.
Lore Friendly Rifles of Skyrim was added to Nexus Mods by creator ENR earlier this month and does exactly what the title says. A lore section in the Skyrim mod’s description provides the in-world reasoning for how these weapons exist in the first place. They come from old Dwemer schematics in the archives of the Synod, one of the magical institutions found throughout Tamriel. Their original purpose was to provide a faster means to counter the magical firepower of Aldmeri battlemages.
Functionally, the mod introduces 13-types of rifles and 8-types of bullets to Skyrim. The firearms are made from vanilla assets and are craftable though they do require the Dwarven smithing perk for anything above iron. Rifles in this mod have crossbow animations while in use and it is not just the Dragonborn who has access to these weapons. Some NPCs will now spawn with firearms in their inventory including simple bandits and guards, making it seem that this mod will make rifles somewhat commonplace across Skyrim.
Lore Friendly Rifles of Skyrim is by no means the first mod made by the Skyrim community that introduces firearms to Tamriel, however, it does set itself apart with the added lore. It also helps that the rifles themselves use existing assets from the base game, allowing the cultures of the various races scattered across Skyrim to still be present in this custom work. The creator of this mod should be commended for their cleverness of working within the existing boundaries of the vanilla game while still providing a unique gameplay element that has some reasoning for its existence. Now players can see if these weapons do as they were intended, according to the creator’s lore, by pitting firearms against magic.
The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim is available to play across Nintendo Switch, PC, PS5, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X|S platforms.
