Skyrim’s Ebony Blade Moves on Its Own When Player Leaves the Room

While playing Bethesda’s The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, one player noticed their Ebony Blade had moved after each time they returned home.

An Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim player often returns to their in-game home and finds their shelved Ebony Blade has moved. It seems a strange phenomenon for an equally strange weapon, which players can obtain by completing one of Skyrim’s many Daedric quests, “The Whispering Door.”

Notably, the Ebony Blade counts among the 15 Daedric Artifacts that users can acquire; it’s proven quite the fan-favorite weapon, too. The blade in question, not to be confused with the Ebony Sword, once belonged to the Daedra Lord Mephala, who has quite an extensive history in The Elder Scrolls lore. However, Mephala’s blade is most interesting in that it grows more powerful for every two friendly characters slain with it equipped.  This is made possible by the Absorb Health enchantment, which now seems as though it may harbor an insatiable hunger in light of details featured in a popular Reddit post.

A Reddit user who goes by MrPathetic69 shared a few screenshots on the Skyrim subreddit over the weekend. The first image shows the formidable Ebony Blade positioned in a weapon rack. When the player left home and returned, the blade was essentially levitating in mid-air above another part of the rack. The third and final screenshot sees the Ebony Blade floating even higher in the air, indicating this particular weapon gets up to a lot of trouble when its owner isn’t looking. See all three screenshots documenting the Ebony Blade’s weird behavior below:

While MrPathetic69 claims in a subsequent post that the Ebony Blade shouldn’t be “hungry” because all of Riverwood’s NPCs were slain with it, the weapon is clearly not satisfied as of yet. Perhaps this odd behavior serves as evidence that some Skyrim weapons act in a manner reminiscent of the toys in Toy Story – they may get up and move around when no one’s watching.

Originally released on PC, PS3, and Xbox 360 in November 2011, The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim recently celebrated its 10th anniversary. Bethesda marked the occasion by rolling out yet another new version of the groundbreaking role-playing title, Skyrim Anniversary Edition. The latest iteration from developer Bethesda Game Studios packs in enhanced visuals, fishing mechanics, an immersive Survival Mode, and a wide array of Creation Club content.
