The False King Brings Lovecraftian Horror To Switch

Developer Drop of Pixel has announced Underworld Dreams: The False King, a Lovecraftian horror game in the works for PC and Nintendo Switch.

One-man studio Drop of Pixel and publisher Skystone Games Inc. have shared details on Underworld Dreams: The False Kingdom, a Lovecraftian horror game set to hit Nintendo Switch and PC sometime this spring. An intense psychological horror adventure inspired by the works of H.P. Lovecraft and Robert W. Chambers, Underworld Dreams will take the form of an interactive anthology horror series akin to Supermassive Games’ The Dark Pictures Anthology.

An abundance of Lovecraftian horror video games currently floods the market. Titles such as Call of Cthulhu and The Sinking City wear the eldritch influences on their sleeves, whereas the likes of The Vanishing of Ethan Carter don’t appear very Lovecraftian at first blush. Of course, this style of experience will not soon take a backseat either, suggesting the cosmic horror genre, in general, could be approaching the realm of oversaturation. But countless stories of intrigue no doubt remain waiting in the wings, one of which may very well take the shape of a Nintendo Switch console exclusive.

Recently, Drop of Pixel and Skystone Games Inc. announced plans to release Underworld Dreams: The False Kingdom on Nintendo Switch and PC via Steam during Spring 2022. Set in the 1980s, The False Kingdom marks the first entry in the Underworld Dreams anthology series and follows a man who mounts a search for his missing brother. What he stumbles across in his search is an abandoned building, its dilapidated structure hiding something sinister deep within. The developer built The False Kingdom from the ground up with Switch in mind and reexamined the roots of horror in gaming to craft a truly immersive experience. Get a glimpse via the following reveal trailer:

The psychological world of Underworld Dreams: The False King borrows heavily from the works of H.P. Lovecraft and Robert W. Chambers’ “The King in Yellow.” Players who dive head first into the dark narrative should anticipate puzzles to solve, monsters to fight with limited ammo, and a score of horrors lurking around the detailed environments.

Details concerning future entries in the Underworld Dreams anthology currently remain under lock and key, though they, too, will likely bring another phase of eldritch terror to Switch and PC. If plans are in place for releases across other platforms, Drop of Pixel and Skystone Games have yet to confirm as much.
