Street striping: Beginning on Monday, Nov. 29, 2021, weather permitting, San Bar Construction will start the restriping of the following streets: Scenic Avenue from First Street to Indian Wells Road; First Street from Scenic Avenue to the east side of White Sands Boulevard; Tenth Street from Scenic Avenue to the east side of White Sands Boulevard; Indian Wells Road from Scenic Avenue to approximately Indiana Avenue. Motorist are cautioned to reduce speed in these areas when approaching striping crews. The contractor will have rolling traffic control with flashers as they work in the designated areas. This work is expected to last 3 to 4 weeks, weather permitting.

Volunteers needed: The Alamo Senior Center is seeking help from volunteers to deliver meals to homebound seniors (Meals on Wheels, MOW). Volunteers can help once or twice a week or as often as they would like. Currently, volunteers report to the MOW’s parking area at the senior center on Puerto Rico Ave. between 10 a.m. and 10:30 a.m. The MOW’s staff bring their hot/cold containers out to them so that the volunteers do not have enter the building. On average volunteers will deliver to 12 seniors and routes take an average of 1 hour to complete. Individuals interested in volunteering can call the Alamo Senior Center MOW’s supervisor, Eddie Perez, at 575-439-4150 to get more information and ask to be added to the schedule.

Graffiti cleanup: If you or someone you know has graffiti on their building, fence, outbuilding, or any other type of fixture, Keep Alamogordo Beautiful can eradicate the graffiti free of charge. Stop by the Sgt. Willie Estrada Memorial Civic Center, 800 First Street, City Hall at 1376 E. 9th Street, or Code Enforcement at 2010 Oregon Avenue and fill out a simple form. The form is also available on the City’s website at http://ci.alamogordo.nm.us/formcenter/city-clerk-10/graffiti-waiver-2018-54.

FAN Club: Food and Networking, held every second Friday of the month. Each FAN Club is sponsored by a different business. FAN Club begins at 8 a.m. at Rocket City Family Fun Center – join us for free breakfast and a presentation by the sponsor. This meeting is open to the community.

NAACP Monthly Meeting: The NAACP meets the second Saturday of each month at 1 p.m. at Owen Chapel A.M.E. Church, 423 Delaware Avenue. For more information call Nate Christian Sr. 575-491-4538.

Alamogordo City Commission meeting: A regular meeting of the Alamogordo City Commission is scheduled for 6 p.m. Dec. 14 at City Hall Commission CHambers, 1376 E. New Day Al-Alon: This group meets every Thursday at noon at Our Savior Lutheran Church, 1212 Washington Ave., in the Education Building. Use north door. For more information, call 437-2970.

Search & Rescue: The group is looking for men and women who want want to help by being hikers and climbers. Attendees learn GPS, compass, maps, navigation, survival skills and search techniques. Alamogordo MOPS: Attention mothers of children of all ages, MOPS is a place designed specifically for you. Alamogordo Al-Anon: This one day at a time Al-Anon group will meet at Bethel Baptist Church, 1316 Scenic Drive, every Monday at 7 p.m.

Park permits/reservation: The City of Alamogordo continues its present policy of no park permits/reservations will be provided at this time due to COVID-19. Citizens are permitted to use the park spaces on a first come, first served basis but must adhere to all COVID-19 guidelines including groups no larger than 10 people, social distancing, mask wearing, etc. The City would also like to remind the community that all city-operated ballfields are currently closed due to COVID-19. The City is taking every precaution to minimize the risk to our community and will continue to monitor the situation and work closely with the State of New Mexico and the Department of Health.

Drive-thru Food Pantry: White Sands Rotary Club sponsors a drive-thru mobile food pantry at the Boles Acres Volunteer Fire Department on the 4th Wednesday of each month. Distribution will begin around 9:30 am on Wednesday, Nov. 24. All are welcome until the food runs out.

Utility Billing Customer Service: Utility Billing Customer Service is excited to expand their in person hours beginning Sept. 20, 2021. Thanks to the addition of new staff, Customer Service windows at City Hall will be open from 10 am to noon and 1 pm – 5 pm. Staff will be still be available via phone and email from 8 am to noon and 1 pm – 5 pm. New payment kiosks that will be able to receive payments anytime are in process and will hopefully be available the beginning of November. As a reminder, there are five convenient alternatives to paying your utility bill in person at City Hall: Via debit/credit card and electronic check on the City Website at the Online Utility Payments link; Auto draft to pay directly through some banks and financial institutions; Through the mail with a check or money order; Checks or money orders can be dropped off directly in the payment drop box outside City Hall; Over the phone, dial 575-439-4260 and select the proper option to pay your bill.

Business Impact/Government Relations Meeting: This meeting happens the second Tuesday of every month, 8 a.m. at the Alamogordo Chamber of Commerce. Agencies and organizations from across the county come together to give updates on their businesses. This meeting is open to the community.

Pickleball: The Alamogordo Family Recreation Center (AFRC) is excited to announce that they will begin offering Pickleball Open Gym Sessions starting Nov. 3 for adults ages 18 and up. Two pickleball courts will be set up prior to each session. Patrons are encouraged to bring their own racquets and balls, there will be limited equipment to check out at the front desk. Pre-registration for sessions and drop-ins are permitted.

Chromebooks and hotspots: The Alamogordo Public Library announced that a limited number of Chromebooks and Hotspots are available for checkout to library patrons. Patrons 18 years of age and over, with a valid resident library card in good standing, are eligible to borrow the new equipment. The Chromebooks will be available for check-out for 21 days and are not eligible for renewal. Chromebooks are a laptop type device that will allow users to access the internet via a Wi-Fi or home internet connection. No word processing or spreadsheet software is included with the Chromebooks. The Hotspots check-out for 21 days and are not eligible for renewal. The wireless hotspots use the T-Mobile network and can connect multiple devices to the internet. Library staff cannot guarantee connectivity in all areas nor to multiple devices. “This is such a great opportunity for the residents of Otero County to have access to these Chromebooks and hotspots. Thanks to the American Library Association who made grant funding possible for the Chromebooks while the voters of New Mexico made the Hotspots possible through a GO Bond. The library staff has worked very diligently to make this happen, kudos to all involved,” said Community Services Director Veronica Ortega.
