Craob X not only looks good, but it also packs the power of Intel’s 12th gen processors, up to 32GB of RAM, and 2TB of PCIe 4.0 SSD storage.
The Craob X is not only 7mm thick, charges wirelessly, and comes armed with an almost bezel-less 4K panel with a hole-punch cutout at the top, but it also might be the world’s first portless laptop. Like it or not, the laptop industry is steadily moving towards a port-free design future, thanks to a relentless pursuit of making thin and light machines. The best example of this is none other than industrial design stalwart Apple.
The MacBook Air blazed a new trail in the industry and continues to be a benchmark for thin and light machines. The decision to offer only a pair of USB-C ports on its pricey laptops drew some scathing criticism, burdening users with the infamous ‘dongle life’ and catalyzing a whole market of accessories like hubs. However, the competition from the Windows side of the ecosystem has followed in the same footsteps. Take, for example, the sleek new Dell XPS 13 Plus, which has even omitted the 3.5mm headphone jack to achieve its futuristic look.
Craob, a relatively unknown brand is now showing off a laptop that is void of all ports. The machine is called the Craob X and, at first glance, it looks like the dream ultrabook. For charging, the laptop relies on a dock that snaps magnetically on the lid, somewhat like Apple’s own MagSafe charging puck. To solve the port dilemma, the wireless charging block serves as a hub of ports too, offering a USB-C, USB-A, Thunderbolt, SD card reader, and a microSD card slot, complete with its own rechargeable battery.
A Little Too Good To Be True?
The machine is just 7mm thick, which is actually insane. For comparison, the iPhone 13 Pro is 7.6mm thick. The laptop weighs a mere 1.9 pounds and flaunts a brushed dark grey metallic luster. The innards are no slouch either. A 12th Gen Intel processor (up to Core i7) runs the show paired with up to 32 gigs of LPDDR5 RAM and up to 2TB of PCIe 4.0 SSD. That’s not all. The 4K display looks stunning in the renders shared by the company, with bezels that are even thinner than what Dell offers on its eye-candy XPS laptops. To accommodate the webcam, the company has had to drill a hole punch at the top, just like Samsung’s upcoming Galaxy S22 series phones, and possibly Apple’s iPhone 14 lineup.
However, there are a few concerns. Cramming all that firepower in the thin chassis sounds like a thermal nightmare, and there is almost certainly no cooling fan inside. Plus, Craob has only given a vague “coming soon” outlook for its sleek laptop. There is always the possibility that this machine might turn out to be another Kickstarter-esque “a little too good to be true” project, so it might be worth keeping expectations in check until the company shares more concrete details on its new port-free laptop.
