God Of War PC Player Count Overtakes Horizon Zero Dawn, Days Gone

Just two days after launch, God of War PC hit a maximum player count of 73,529 – beating other PS4 games on PC like Days Gone and Horizon Zero Dawn.

It has only been a few days since God of War came to PC and already the concurrent player count peak has surpassed that of Horizon Zero Dawn and Days Gone. The winner of The Game Awards 2018’s Game of the Year is the latest Sony exclusive to come to PC and it will not be the last, with other notable titles such as Uncharted and Death Stranding: Director’s Cut set to receive ports later this year.

Last year Sony reinforced its commitment to bring many of its exclusive titles to a PC format. Back in 2020, Horizon Zero Dawn was the first to make the conversion, however that particular PC port was filled with many bugs at launch and required some patch work to address the major issues. Since then it appears Sony has gotten a better handle on the porting process, going so far as to even enhance already beloved titles. This has all led up to God of War‘s PC version, with the game coming to Steam and the Epic Games Store on January 14.

Over on Twitter, games analyst Benji-Sales (via TheGamer) highlighted some figures of God of War‘s PC success on Steam, comparing the latest Sony exclusive port to Horizon Zero Dawn and Days Gone. According to the analyst, on January 16, two days post-launch, God of War‘s PC port saw a peak concurrent player count of 73,529. This is almost 20,000 more than Horizon Zero Dawn‘s peak count at 56,557 and nearly three times that of Days Gone, which maxed out at 27,450. Benji-Sales also noted in their tweet that these PC numbers indicate the sales figures for God of War are now likely more than 20 million units sold in the title’s lifetime.

It was recently suggested by God of War‘s creative director Cory Barlog that the idea for the game’s PC release actually came from the teams behind PlayStation Studios, who reportedly had to convince Sony to make the port happen. With glowing reviews and positivity already existing for many of these titles on consoles, it seems sensible that the creators wanted to expand their audience with a PC release. Not only does it give Sony a chance to make more money, but it has also allowed these exclusives to be enhanced from the hardware they were originally created for.

The success of Sony’s PC ports is likely to continue when Uncharted: Legacy of Thieves makes the jump later this year, and should signal to the developers that there is a great desire for more. There are many beloved PlayStation exclusives without announced PC ports that fans have been clamoring for, including Bloodborne for PC. God of War continues to prove that this is a successful strategy and Sony’s conversion push will likely intensify so long as it continues.
