Greeley man sentenced to 24 years in Target robbery

Abdirahman Mohamed was convicted on several counts related to a robbery in the Greeley Target in July 2020, according to the Weld County DA’s office.

GREELEY, Colo. — A Greeley man was sentenced last week to 24 years in prison for threatening a Target employee and stealing a laptop while he was on parole, according to the Weld County District Attorney’s Office.

In July, a jury found Abdirahman Hussein Mohamed guilty of aggravated robbery, menacing with a deadly weapon and theft, related to the robbery a year before.

According to the DA’s office, in July 2020, Mohamed went into the Greeley Target, at 4400 Centerplace Drive, and asked an employee at the customer service county to bring out an HP Chromebook laptop.

While the employee was ringing up the laptop and a set of headphones, Mohamed leaned past the shield at the counter, pulled down his mask and told the employee that he had a gun. Mohamed said he would come back to the store and shoot the place up if the employee told anyone, the DA’s office said in a news release.

Mohamed then took the laptop without paying for it, according to the release.

The Greeley Police Department (GPD) later learned that Mohamed was on parole and wearing a GPS monitor.

He was on parole for three cases in Weld County:

  • In 2016, he pleaded guilty to attempted robbery.
  • Also in 2016, he pleaded guilty to aggravated motor vehicle theft.
  • In 2013, he was sentenced for second-degree burglary.

When Mohamed was arrested the day after the Target robbery, police officers found a gun holster concealed in his pants, the DA’s office said.

The employee said in a statement prepared for the sentencing that the threat to their life had changed them forever.

“The night after the robbery, I remember pacing around, wondering if this man was going to show up and seek out his vengeance,” the victim said in their statement. “He already threatened my life once. Why wouldn’t he again?”
