Volvo has revealed a new Range Assistant app that allows EV motorists to manage and hone the driving range of their electric car.
Set to roll-out via an over-the-air software update, the Range Assistant initially launches as a beta version.
Built into the Android Automotive operating system that comes as standard on the XC40 Recharge, Volvo says it helps owners to track and optimise the remaining range of their battery.
It promises ‘smart energy management and advice on driving style’ – and gives current energy consumption in real time.
Clever range optimiser functionality will even automatically adjust the climate control system to boost potential mileage.
Volvo adds that development of the Range Assistant app will continue ahead of a full release, with planned developments including a driver coach that gives ‘smart, easy-to-follow recommendations on how to adjust driving style and speed to maximise the car’s range’.
As the software update is delivered over the air, owners won’t need to visit a Volvo dealer.
Other improvements with the latest update – which is similar to a smartphone software update – include improvements to the safety systems, enhanced information on the effect of cold weather on battery range, and other bug fixes.
“Through in-house development of software and over-the-air updates, we can constantly improve our cars and make sure that your electric Volvo stays fresh,” said Sanela Ibrovic, head of connected experience at Volvo.
XC40 Recharge owners will be alerted about the new software version on the central infotainment touchscreen – and they’ll also be alerted when it’s underway via the Volvo Cars smartphone app.
Roll-out begins now and Volvo says all models will be updated by the end of October.
